EXPRESSIONS OF OBLIGATION

➥ Have Got To
It in informal. For external, general obligations, when it's the law, arule, regulations, etc.
- You've got to wear a uniform at school.
- He has got to go.
➥ Should
It is less strong than "must"
It is used to give advice, to say what's the right or wrong thing do.
- You should work less.
- The goverment shouldn't increase the price of gasoline.
➥ Ought to
It means suggestion. You should do something but you don't have to do it.
- We ought to clean the house tonight.
- You ought to be diligent to study.
➥ Had Better / You'd better
It is mostly used as an advice.
- You'd better take an umbrella.
- He'd better not be confused with this problem (be + C)
➥ To be Expected To
It expresses necessity or obligation.It usually indicates that someone else has imposed condition on us.
- I am expected to take out the garbage.
➥ To Be Supposed To
It can be used to mean "It is said/believed"
- The new James Bond movie is supposed to be excellent.
- It is supposed to be the best restaurant in town.
It can be used to talk about what is arranged, Intended or expected. It is a bit like "Should".
- I'm supposed to pay my rent on the first of the month.
- She's not supposed to be here.
It can be used as unfulfilled expectation
- Jack was supposed to call me last night.
- I'm supposed to be there before 8 but I'm often late.
➥ To Be To Infinitive
In written English, we can use this pattern to refer to an obligation or requirement that we do something at a time later than now. It is similar in meaning to must, but there is a suggestion that something has been arranged or organized for us. It is not normally used in spoken English.
- Official arrangements : The Prime Minister is to visit India next month.
- Official orders : At the end of the course, all students are to take a written exam.
- Things that should be done : What am I to do?
- A possible aim when saying what should be done to reach it : if you are to work here for more than three months, you must have a residence permit.
- Prohibition (only in the negative) : You are not to do that again.
